i thought the one thing i would siam teaching in JC is to be the assessor for oral examinations

turns out that there's Oral Presentation!

many things to look out for during one presentation: clarity, fluency, audibility, good pronunciation, good pacing, variation in tone, eye contact, whether eye contact is broad and sweeping and sustained throughout, whether candidate cheats by gazing over heads so that s/he appears to be maintaining eye contact, hand gestures, whether hand gestures are consistently maintained, whether s/he works with the screen, smile, whether smile feels artificial, warmth factor

concurrently, i have to look at the PPT slides and listen to the presentation and determine: wordy slides? attractive graphics? slides presented in a point-by-point fashion? seamless link between what's on the screen and speaker's presentation content? coordination betwen clicker and speaker?

so that my partner and i can generate questions on the spot for candidates' Q & A later:

must formulate How and Why questions because What questions are limiting in scope, decide if these questions are broad enough to let candidates expound on while ensuring that they are not too broad as to throw them off because they don't know how to approach the Qs.

and during Q n A:

copy down the answer while trying to maintain eye contact, making encouraging sounds as a sign of encouragement, decide whether answer is relevant, comprises 2-3 points and is well elaborated on. if candidate fumbles and gives answers that erm went over our heads, to give him/her a question for second chances. or prompt further so that candidate can display critical thinking and give us an ooomph! that pushes the answer to an EE

all this for ONE group

we start from 8 am and end at 3 or 4 pm, depending on whether there're breaks.

then, it's a gathering at K3-02 for debrief and filling up of assessment indicators for each and every single candidate.

by friday, i was seriously hanging by a thread. just kill me.

then again, OP is darned fun. it's surreal to see YJCians, whom i know but don't teach, present in front of me. it's touching to witness the obvious loyalty and solidarity some classes have. it's adrenalin-pumping when i can tell some groups have put in effort and are just raring to go, eager to impress.

it's an affirmation of our educational system when self-conscious teenagers grow to be confident and articulate young men and women, all within the span of 1.5 weeks. and such dramatic growth when they feel like taut strings, stretched too hard and unable to relax even after their promos is over.
